Beginner's Guide to Video Calling: Connecting with Loved Ones
Published: April 15, 2025 by Golden Webbers
Seeing the faces of family and friends, whether they're across Sheffield or across the world, is a joy. Video calling makes this possible! It might seem technical, but with a little guidance from Golden Webbers, you'll be chatting face-to-face digitally in no time.
What Do I Need to Start?
- A Device with Camera & Microphone: Most modern devices work:
- Smartphones: iPhones and Android phones (like Samsung, Google Pixel) are perfect.
- Tablets: iPads or Android tablets offer a bigger screen.
- Computers: Laptops usually have built-in webcams and microphones. Desktop computers might need a separate webcam plugged in.
- Internet Connection: A reliable connection is key. Your home broadband (Wi-Fi) is generally the best option for clarity and stability. Using mobile data works but can use up your allowance quickly.
- A Video Calling App: This is the software that makes the call. You and the person you're calling usually need the same app. Popular choices include:
- WhatsApp: Very common, uses your phone number. Great for one-on-one or small group calls on phones and computers.
- FaceTime: Simple to use, but only works between Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac).
- Zoom: Often used for larger group calls (like community groups or online classes). You might just need to click a link someone sends you, or you might need a free account.
- Skype: A long-standing option, requires an account. Works on most devices.
- Facebook Messenger: If you use Facebook, you can make video calls through the Messenger app or website.
- An Account (Sometimes): Most apps require a free account, usually linked to your email or phone number. We can help you set this up safely.
How to Make a Call (General Guide)
While buttons might look slightly different in each app, the core steps are usually:
- Open the App: Tap the app's icon.
- Find the Person: Go to your contacts list within the app or search for their name.
- Start the Video Call: Look for a video camera icon ( ) next to their name and tap it. (Make sure you don't tap the regular phone icon ( ), which starts an audio-only call).
- Wait for Answer: They'll get a notification. Give them a moment to answer.
- Chat Away!: You should see them and they should see you! Check that your microphone icon doesn't have a line through it (muted).
- End the Call: Tap the red "End Call" button (usually a phone hanging up icon: ).
Tips for a Better Experience
- Lighting: Face a window or lamp, don't sit with bright light behind you.
- Stability: Prop your device on a table or use a stand. Holding it can be tiring and shaky.
- Sound: Choose a quiet spot. Headphones with a built-in microphone can improve sound quality significantly.
- Framing: Position the camera so your face is nicely centred on the screen.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Ask a friend or family member to do a test call with you.
